- PCX2PCL v1.62
-
- Chapter One
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- Introduction
-
- PCX2PCL is a utility used to convert ZSoft PCX format files to Hewlett-
- Packard PCL (Printer Command Language) format. PCX2PCL successfully
- converts images created with PC Paintbrush, Corel Draw, Scanning Gallery
- (with Hewlett-Packard's ScanJet scanner) and other software that can
- save images in or convert graphics to PCX format. Converted files can
- be downloaded as graphic macros to and printed on HP LaserJet Plus,
- Series II, III, IV and 100% compatible laser printers.
-
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- Why Use Graphic Macros?
-
- If you have the need to print the same graphic image (such as
- signatures, logos, letterhead, etc.) more than once while your printer
- is turned on, and if you are not using the printer's macro feature, then
- you are wasting valuable time.
-
- The macro feature of your printer provides you with essentially the same
- benefits as the soft font feature. That is, just like soft fonts, you
- can download graphic macros once to your printer making them "resident"
- in the printer, and then you can access them from within most
- applications using relatively small printer commands. Since soft fonts
- and graphics are usually comprised of many thousands of bytes of data,
- using small printer commands (generally just a few bytes of data) to
- reuse "resident" soft fonts or graphics can result in a substantial time
- savings when you need to repeatedly print documents which use the soft
- fonts or graphics.
-
- If an application did not take into consideration any soft fonts which
- were already downloaded and resident in the printer, it would download
- them over and over again each time a new document were printed.
- Consequently, the more you print such documents, the more your valuable
- time is wasted. Fortunately, most applications are designed to take
- advantage of the general purpose soft font features. Unfortunately,
- very few (if any) applications are designed to take advantage of the
- graphic macro feature of the LaserJet printers.
-
- PCX2PCL fills this void by allowing you to print graphic images
- repeatedly in your documents without your application needing to
- download the graphics over and over again.
-
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- Registered and Shareware Version Differences
-
- PCX2PCL is distributed as both a shareware product and as a retail
- product. The shareware version and the retail version are identical,
- except that the shareware version displays reminders to order a
- registered copy of PCX2PCL, and it allows you to print the Order Form.
- If you are using the retail version, purchased from TaxWare, Thank You.
- If you are using the shareware version, we hope you find it to be useful.
-
-
- PCX2PCL User's Manual 1
-
- PCX2PCL v1.62
-
- This manual is used with both the shareware and registered versions of
- PCX2PCL. If you are using the shareware version, refer to the following
- documents for additional information: SHAREW.DOC, REGISTER.DOC,
- ORDER.FRM.
-
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- PCX2PCL System Requirements
-
- PCX2PCL requires the following:
-

-
- Chapter Two
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- PCX2PCL Installation
-
- Installing PCX2PCL is very simple:
-
- o Create a subdirectory for PCX2PCL
- o Copy the files from the PCX2PCL distribution diskette to the new
- subdirectory
-
- For example,
-
- Create a subdirectory called PCX2PCL and change directory to it:
-
- C:> MD PCX2PCL
- C:> CD PCX2PCL
-
- Next, place the PCX2PCL distribution diskette in the floppy drive and
- copy all its files to the newly created subdirectory:
-
- C:> COPY A:*.*
-
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- PCX2PCL Quick Evaluation
-
- After you have successfully installed PCX2PCL, you can do a quick
- evaluation to see how the software operates. Simply enter the following
- commands at the DOS prompt. (Your printer must already be turned ON)
-
- PCX2PCL JOHNDOE.PCX (This creates a graphic macro file named
- JOHNDOE.PCL)
-
- TESTMAC JOHNDOE.PCL (This runs a batch file that downloads
- the graphic macro file to your printer,
- then sends the printer command to print
- the macro)
-
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- PCX2PCL Help
-
- Type PCX2PCL at the DOS prompt to receive Usage help. A screen similar
- to the following will appear:
-
-
- PCX2PCL Version 1.62 (reg'd to ?????)

-
- PCX2PCL - PCX To PCL File Conversion Utility
-
- Usage: PCX2PCL [options] PCXFile[.PCX] [PCLFile[.PCL]]
- The following options are available:
-
- /Ln rotate image counter-clockwise n times (n = 1, 2, or 3).
- /N create negative of the original.
-
- PCX2PCL User's Manual 3
-
- PCX2PCL v1.62
-
- /Xn increase image n times (n = 2, 3, or 4).
-
- PCXFile is the file name of a PCX format file to be converted.
- PCLFile (optional) is the file name of the PCL file created.
-
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- PCX2PCL Program Usage
-
- The following example converts the file JOHNDOE.PCX (PCX format) to the
- file JOHNDOE.PCL (PCL format).
-
- >PCX2PCL JOHNDOE.PCX JOHNDOE.PCL
-
- The following commands do the same as the above example:
-
- >PCX2PCL JOHNDOE.PCX
- >PCX2PCL JOHNDOE
-
- The following example converts the file MYLOGO.PCX (PCX format) to the
- file MYLOGO.PCL (PCL format).
-
- >PCX2PCL MYLOGO.PCX MYLOGO.PCL
-
- The following commands do the same as the above example:
-
- >PCX2PCL MYLOGO.PCX
- >PCX2PCL MYLOGO
-
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- PCX2PCL Macro Usage
-
- The converted PCL files can now be used as graphic macros. In order to
- use graphic macros, they must be sent (downloaded) to your printer's
- memory. This can be accomplished by using the DOWNLOAD utility included
- with the package (see accompanying instructions). Once DOWNLOADed to the
- printer's memory, you must access a macro from within your word
- processor or other application by inserting special printer commands.
- The method for inserting the printer commands and for accessing a macro
- will differ, depending upon your application, and it is possible that
- more than one method will work.
-
- For best results, follow the steps outlined below:
-
- 1 Create a PCX file with a scanner or paint or draw program.
- 2 Convert the PCX file to PCL format.
- 3 Download the converted file as a macro using the DOWNLOAD utility
- 4 Follow the instructions below for your particular application.
- 5 Unload the macro from the printer's memory with the UNLOAD utility.
-
- Example Macro Usage
-
- For this example we will go through the steps outlined above in more
- detail. It is assumed that your current directory is where you
- installed the PCX2PCL utility.
-
- 4 PCX2PCL User's Manual
-
- PCX2PCL v1.62
-
-
- 1 Create a PCX file. If you use a scanner, sign your name on white
- paper using a dark ink, scan the signature, and save it as
- JOHNDOE.PCX. If you use a graphics package, create a simple logo
- or some other graphic, and save it in PCX (PC Paintbrush Black &
- White) format. Or, if you prefer, you can use the PCX file
- JOHNDOE.PCX included for your convenience. JOHNDOE.PCX is an
- example of a scanned signature.
-
- 2 Convert the image from PCX to PCL format. The following command
- creates the PCL file JOHNDOE.PCL.
-
- C>PCX2PCL JOHNDOE.PCX (You will see a message
- indicating that the conversion
- is taking place.)
-
- 3 Download the converted file. The following command downloads the
- macro with an ID of 1 to printer LPT1, the default printer.
-
- C>DOWNLOAD JOHNDOE.PCL /M1 (You will see a message
- indicating that the macro is
- being downloaded.)
-
- 4 Follow the instructions in Chapter 3 for accessing and printing the
- macro with your particular software application.
-
- 5 Unload the macro from the printer's memory to free the printer's
- memory for other use. The macro must be UNLOADed using the same ID
- with which it was DOWNLOADed. The following command unloads the
- macro from your printer, freeing the memory the macro occupied.
-
- C>UNLOAD /M1 (You will see a message stating that the
- macro is unloaded.)
-
- Note: A batch file, TESTMAC.BAT, is included to allow you to
- conveniently test print your converted PCL files without having to print
- it through another application. Essentially, the batch file performs
- steps 3 through 5 above.

- PCX2PCL Applications
-
- If a software application can print to a LaserJet printer, there is a
- good chance it can also print PCL graphic macros. In order to print the
- macro, you must insert or embed special printer commands in your
- document. Printer commands are not actually printed by the printer,
- and they do not take up space on the printed documents (although they
- may take up some space on the application screen).
-
- With LaserJets, printer commands always begin with the escape character.
- The way you access the escape character depends on the particular
- application. The ASCII value for the escape character is often
- represented by either 1B (hexadecimal), or 27 (decimal). A complete
- printer command is an escape character followed by a series of letters
- and numbers. The printer command that needs to be sent from your
- software application to the printer is the following:
-
- <ESC>&fs#y3x1S
-
- where <ESC> represents the escape character, and # represents the macro
- ID number for the macro to be printed.
-
- This section describes how to insert the macro printer commands into
- documents of several of the most popular software applications. To
- utilize PCL graphic macros with software programs other than those
- listed here, refer to user's manual of your software application for how
- to send printer commands to the printer.
-
- These instructions are no secret. Information for sending printer
- commands is readily found in user documentation for each application.
- And, the LaserJet commands for accessing macros are found in any of the
- User's and Technical Reference Manuals of LaserJet owners.
-
- Brief instructions are given for the following software applications:
-
- Enveloper (See Enveloper Documentation)
- GRAB Plus (See GRAB Documentation)
- Lotus 1-2-3
- Mail Machine from TaxWare (See Mail Machine Documentation)
- MicroSoft Word for DOS
- MicroSoft Word For Windows
- Quattro Pro
- Symphony
- WinGrab (See GRAB Documentation)
- WordPerfect for DOS
- WordPerfect for Windows
- dBASE
-
- If instructions are not included for an application that you would like to
- use with graphic macros, please drop us a line. We will certainly do our
- best to accommodate you. If you were able to utilize a graphic macro using an
- application not listed here, we would like to know how you did it.
